Great things in business are never done by one person. They're done by a team of people.” -Steve Jobs, Founder, Apple Inc.

Don’t Break Your Seinfeld Chain to Success

I find that when talking with business owners that they find it’s difficult to get and stay consistent on their most important tasks because life and business just gets in the way.

I want to share with you a little story and a technique so that you can gain and maintain your consistency in doing the successful things that you need to do to achieve your goals.

It starts with Jerry Seinfeld

Everyone knows Jerry Seinfeld, one of the most successful comics ever. He was going on a tv show and there was an up and coming comic that was in the Green Room before going on set and was asking “How did you become so successful?” And in Jerry’s way, he said:

“I just don’t break the chain.”

And the young comic says “What chain? What do you mean?”

And Jerry says, “Well, my Success Criteria is that I need to write every day. Whether I’m inspired or not, no matter where in the world I am, I need to write every single day, and that’s my key to success.

So whenever I do write, I put an ‘X’ on my calendar. And the next day I write again, and I put another ‘X’ on the calendar, and it makes a chain, all these ‘X’s link into each other to make a chain. My goal is just to never break the chain – the chain of writing.

In your business, what is your Success Activity? What is the one thing that you know, were you to to do it consistently, over time you would achieve what you want to achieve? Make a chain around it.

When you do that activity, put an ‘X’ on your calendar. Even if it’s monthly, daily, weekly, hourly, the frequency doesn’t really matter, but just block the time to do that successful activity.

Commit to it and make sure that you protect that time as well. There could be things that are going to try to get in the way of it. Strategize on how you can make sure those things do not get in the way of that successful activity.

Do it at a high-energy level of the day for you. If you have lots of energy in the morning, great, do that important thing in the morning. If you have a higher energy level in the afternoon, do it then. But don’t break the chain.

So that’s it for this week – just don’t break your Seinfeld Chain on the important things that you need to do in your business to achieve your success!

I look forward to continuing our video chain in our video series with something for you next week, and I look forward to seeing you then.
