How to Delegate Like a Business Owner

As in…busy doing things that you wish you didn’t have to do?
As in…doing things that you wish you could delegate off on to somebody else? …Perhaps even things that you’ve tried delegating in the past but it didn’t work out.
Here’s how this often happens: We try to delegate something to someone else on the team, they don’t do a great job on it, and we end up taking it back.
And we end up as business owners, having all kinds of things that only we can do, which keeps us really really busy.
In reality, there’s probably only one or two or three things that we do that are really moving our businesses forward and the rest of a lot of busy work that probably could and should be delegated to somebody else.
Why do we have this challenge of getting other people on the team to do these things effectively?
It’s actually because we’re a little bit incompetent.
And what I mean by that is we’re so good at what we do, when we’re trying to explain it to somebody else, we forget a bunch of little steps in between the big steps. We just take it for granted because we’re just so good at it, we don’t even think about it anymore.
It’s kind of like driving, you don’t really have to think about steering, and putting on your signal, you just do it without even thinking.
But when you’re new to driving, you really have to focus and look in your mirror, and signal, and brake and be really conscious of it.
We call this Unconscious Competence, meaning we’re so good at it, we have a little bit of Incompetence in how we explain what we do.
